TikiWiki up to 8.3 bannerlib.php unserialize sendarticles code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in TikiWiki (Content Management System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function unserialize in the library lib/banners/bannerlib.php. The manipulation of the argument sendarticles with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

TikiWiki CMS/Groupware before 6.7 LTS and before 8.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via a crafted serialized object in the (1) cookieName to lib/banners/bannerlib.php; (2) printpages or (3) printstructures parameter to (a) tiki-print_multi_pages.php or (b) tiki-print_pages.php; or (4) sendpages, (5) sendstructures, or (6) sendarticles parameter to tiki-send_objects.php, which is not properly handled when processed by the unserialize function.

The weakness was disclosed 07/12/2012 by Egidio Romano (Website). The advisory is shared for download at info.tiki.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0911 since 01/23/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:lib/banners/bannerlib.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61733 (TikiWiki unserialize() Function Arbitrary Code Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

Upgrading to version 5.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76758), Tenable (61733) and Exploit-DB (19630). The entry 61259 is pretty similar.
