GNU GIMP up to 2.8.0 fits-io.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in GNU GIMP up to 2.8.0 (Image Processing Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file fits-io.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

fits-io.c in GIMP before 2.8.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a malformed XTENSION header of a .fit file, as demonstrated using a long string.

The weakness was presented 07/12/2012 by Joseph Sheridan as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.gnome.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-3236 since 06/06/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Joseph Sheridan and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80620 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : gimp (cve_2012_3236_buffer_overflow)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120907 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 11.4/11.4b Missing).

Upgrading to version 2.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76658), Tenable (80620) and Exploit-DB (19482). See 5442, 5443, 6344 and 6763 for similar entries.
