Integer overflow in the jpeg_data_load_data function in jpeg-data.c in libjpeg in exif 0.6.20 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer over-read and application crash) or obtain potentially sensitive information via a crafted JPEG file.
The weakness was presented 07/13/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mandriva.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2845. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 60132 (Fedora 17 : exif-0.6.21-1.fc17 (2012-10854)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121339 (Solaris Multiple Vulnerabilities in libexif).
