GNOME Rhythmbox up to 0.7.2 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in GNOME Rhythmbox up to 0.7.2. This affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

(1) AlbumTab.py, (2) ArtistTab.py, (3) LinksTab.py, and (4) LyricsTab.py in the Context module in GNOME Rhythmbox 0.13.3 and earlier allows local users to execute arbitrary code via a symlink attack on a temporary HTML template file in the /tmp/context directory.

The weakness was shared 07/17/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared at hermes.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3355 since 06/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74700 (openSUSE Security Update : rhythmbox (openSUSE-SU-2012:0954-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76538) and Tenable (74700).
