Wireshark up to 1.8.0 NFS Dissector code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects an unknown code of the component NFS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

epan/dissectors/packet-nfs.c in the NFS dissector in Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.14, 1.6.x before 1.6.9, and 1.8.x before 1.8.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (loop and CPU consumption) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was released 07/24/2012 with Wireshark (Website). The advisory is shared at anonsvn.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-4049 since 07/24/2012. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61588 (FreeBSD : Wireshark -- Multiple vulnerabilities (4cdfe875-e8d6-11e1-bea0-002354ed89bc)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120907 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 11.4/11.4b Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.8.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77158) and Tenable (61588). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 5442, 5443, 6344 and 6763.
