pdo_sql_parser.re in the PDO extension in PHP before 5.3.14 and 5.4.x before 5.4.4 does not properly determine the end of the query string during parsing of prepared statements, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted parameter value.
The weakness was shared 08/06/2012 by 0x721427D8 as Bug 769785 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.novell.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-3450 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61520 (Debian DSA-2527-1 : php5 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 5.4.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
