The good_client function in rquotad (rquota_svc.c) in Linux DiskQuota (aka quota) before 3.17 invokes the hosts_ctl function the first time without a host name, which might allow remote attackers to bypass TCP Wrappers rules in hosts.deny.

The weakness was presented 08/13/2012 by Tomas Hoger as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at linuxquota.git.sourceforge.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3417 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74721 (openSUSE Security Update : quota (openSUSE-SU-2012:1058-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 3.01 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at linuxquota.git.sourceforge.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
