FFmpeg up to 0.8.10 avpriv_dv_produce_packet memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The avpriv_dv_produce_packet function in libavcodec in FFmpeg 0.7.x before 0.7.12 and 0.8.x before 0.8.11 and in Libav 0.5.x before 0.5.9, 0.6.x before 0.6.6, 0.7.x before 0.7.5, and 0.8.x before 0.8.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted DV file.

The issue has been introduced in 06/23/2011. The weakness was shared 08/20/2012 by ami_stuff as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.libav.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3929 since 10/01/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 424 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62651 (GLSA-201210-06 : Libav: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175239 (Debian Security Update for FFmpeg (DSA-2471)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.libav.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78276) and Tenable (62651). The entries 5073, 5074, 5075 and 61721 are related to this item.
