FFmpeg up to 0.8.10 atrac3.c decodeTonalComponents input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function decodeTonalComponents of the file atrac3.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The decodeTonalComponents function in the Actrac3 codec (atrac3.c) in libavcodec in FFmpeg 0.7.x before 0.7.12, and 0.8.x before 0.8.11; and in Libav 0.5.x before 0.5.9, 0.6.x before 0.6.6, 0.7.x before 0.7.5, and 0.8.x before 0.8.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a large component count in an Atrac 3 file.

The issue has been introduced in 06/23/2011. The weakness was disclosed 08/20/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0853 since 01/19/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 424 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59094 (Debian DSA-2471-1 : ffmpeg - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175239 (Debian Security Update for FFmpeg (DSA-2471)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (59094). The entries 5073, 5074, 5075 and 61697 are pretty similar.
