libav up to 0.7.2 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the Sierra VMD decoder in libavcodec in FFmpeg 0.5.x before 0.5.7, 0.6.x before 0.6.4, 0.7.x before 0.7.9 and 0.8.x before 0.8.8; and in Libav 0.5.x before 0.5.6, 0.6.x before 0.6.4, and 0.7.x before 0.7.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted VMD file, related to corrupted streams.

The weakness was published 08/20/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4364 since 11/04/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57518 (Debian DSA-2378-1 : ffmpeg - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195145 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libav Vulnerabilities (USN-1333-1)).

Upgrading to version 0.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
