Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in program/lib/washtml.php in Roundcube Webmail 0.8.0 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML by using "javascript:" in an href attribute in the body of an HTML-formatted email.

The weakness was disclosed 08/25/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3508 since 06/14/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62134 (Fedora 18 : roundcubemail-0.7.3-1.fc18 (2012-12290)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165334 (SUSE Security Update for roundcubemail (openSUSE-SU-2012:1124-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
