Multiple memory leaks in Performance Co-Pilot (PCP) before 3.6.5 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption or daemon crash) via a large number of PDUs with (1) a crafted context number to the DoFetch function in pmcd/src/dofetch.c or (2) a negative type value to the __pmGetPDU function in libpcp/src/pdu.c.
The weakness was shared 08/27/2012 by Florian Weimer (Website). The advisory is available at hermes.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3420 since 06/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61652 (Debian DSA-2533-1 : pcp - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. Upgrading to version 2.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
