The weakness was disclosed 08/29/2012 by Ben Williams (Website). The advisory is shared at symantec.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3581 since 06/19/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62010 (Symantec Messaging Gateway 9.5.x Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM12-013)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12594 (Symantec Messaging Gateway Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM12-013)).

Upgrading to version 9.5.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
