GNOME librsvg 2.34.0 null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in GNOME librsvg 2.34.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

librsvg before 2.34.1 uses the node name to identify the type of node, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a SVG file with a node with the element name starting with "fe," which is misidentified as a RsvgFilterPrimitive.

The weakness was shared 09/05/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.gnome.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3146 since 08/16/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75509 (openSUSE Security Update : gdk-pixbuf-loader-rsvg (openSUSE-SU-2011:1090-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120904 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 8.5 Missing).

Upgrading to version 2.34.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (75509). The entries 4989, 4990, 4991 and 4992 are related to this item.
