Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3 (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Apple Mac OS X before 10.7.5 does not properly handle the bNbrPorts field of a USB hub descriptor, which allows physically proximate attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and system crash) by attaching a USB device.

The weakness was disclosed 09/20/2012 by Jesse Ruderman with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3723 since 06/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62214 (Mac OS X 10.7.x < 10.7.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120531 (Apple Mountain Lion v10.8.2, OS X Lion v10.7.5 and Security Update 2012-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-2)).

Upgrading to version 10.4 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78750), Tenable (62214), SecurityFocus (BID 55623†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-37262†). The entries VDB-4792, VDB-5416, VDB-5418 and VDB-5419 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
