Horde 3.3.12, Horde Groupware 1.2.10, and Horde Groupware Webmail Edition 1.2.10, as distributed by FTP between November 2011 and February 2012, contains an externally introduced modification (Trojan Horse) in templates/javascript/open_calendar.js, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code.

The weakness was disclosed 09/25/2012 as Bug 790877 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0209. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58010 (Horde 3.3.12 open_calendar.js Backdoor), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12668 (Horde Backdoor Arbitrary PHP Code Execution Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 21375. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19229.
