condor up to 7.8.3 improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in condor up to 7.8.3. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The filesystem authentication (condor_io/condor_auth_fs.cpp) in Condor 7.6.x before 7.6.10 and 7.8.x before 7.8.4 uses authentication directories even when they have weak permissions, which allows remote attackers to impersonate users by renaming a user s authentication directory.

The weakness was disclosed 09/28/2012 by Florian Weimer as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at condor-git.cs.wisc.edu. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3492 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76649 (RHEL 5 : MRG (RHSA-2012:1278)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 7.6.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at condor-git.cs.wisc.edu. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (76649), SecurityFocus (BID 55632†) and Secunia (SA50666†). The entries VDB-62478, VDB-62476, VDB-62475 and VDB-62474 are pretty similar.
