The weakness was disclosed 10/05/2012 as MSVR/MSV as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-4896 since 09/12/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/14/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62390 (SumatraPDF < 2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120530 (Sumatra PDF Reader Arbitrary Code Execution).

Upgrading to version 0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MSVR/MSV is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78705) and Tenable (62390). The entries 6007, 60714, 60713 and 60712 are pretty similar.
