Mozilla Thunderbird prior 13.0 cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird (Mail Client Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Mozilla Firefox before 16.0, Thunderbird before 16.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.13 do not properly handle navigation away from a web page that has multiple menus of SELECT elements active, which allows remote attackers to conduct clickjacking attacks via vectors involving an XPI file, the window.open method, and the Geolocation API, a different vulnerability than CVE-2012-3984.

The weakness was published 10/10/2012 by Jordi Chancel as Bug 726264 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-5354 since 10/10/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63402 (GLSA-201301-01 : Mozilla Products: Multiple vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 13.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79474) and Tenable (63402). Similar entries are available at 5327, 6636, 6637 and 6638.
