Red Hat IcedTea-Web up to 1.2.1 Error Message IcedTeaScriptablePluginObject.cc invoke numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This issue affects the function invoke of the file IcedTeaScriptablePluginObject.cc of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Off-by-one error in the invoke function in IcedTeaScriptablePluginObject.cc in IcedTea-Web 1.1.x before 1.1.7, 1.2.x before 1.2.2, 1.3.x before 1.3.1, and 1.4.x before 1.4.1 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information, cause a denial of service (crash), or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted webpage that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow, related to an error message and a "triggering event attached to applet." NOTE: the 1.4.x versions were originally associated with CVE-2013-4349, but that entry has been MERGED with this one.

The weakness was disclosed 11/11/2012 by Arthur Gerkis as Bug 869040 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4540 since 08/21/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70060 (Fedora 20 : icedtea-web-1.4.1-0.fc20 (2013-16971)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168076 (OpenSuSE Security Update for icedtea-web (openSUSE-SU-2015:1595-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79894) and Tenable (70060).
