FreeRADIUS 2.1.10/2.1.11/2.1.12 Function Certificate cbtls_verify memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in FreeRADIUS 2.1.10/2.1.11/2.1.12 (Network Authentication Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function cbtls_verify of the component Function Certificate Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the cbtls_verify function in FreeRADIUS 2.1.10 through 2.1.12, when using TLS-based EAP methods, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (server crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long "not after" timestamp in a client certificate.

The weakness was published 09/10/2012 by Timo Warns with PRESENSE Technologies GmbH as PRE-SA-2012-06 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at pre-cert.de. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-3547 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74758 (openSUSE Security Update : freeradius (openSUSE-SU-2012:1200-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350616 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for freeradius: ALAS-2012-131).

Upgrading to version 2.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at freeradius.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78408), Tenable (74758), SecurityFocus (BID 55483†), OSVDB (85325†) and Secunia (SA50484†). Similar entries are available at VDB-10954, VDB-63739 and VDB-76031.
