Novell GroupWise up to 2012 Web Admin Interface gwia.exe Content-Length numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Novell GroupWise (Groupware Software). It has been classified as very critical. This affects an unknown code of the file gwia.exe of the component Web Admin Interface. The manipulation of the argument Content-Length with the input value -1 leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the WebConsole component in gwia.exe in GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) in Novell GroupWise 8.0 before 8.0.3 HP1 and 2012 before SP1 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted request that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow, as demonstrated by a request with -1 in the Content-Length HTTP header.

The weakness was disclosed 09/14/2012 by Francis Provencher (Agent) with Protek Research Lab's as SA50622 as confirmed advisory (Website) via Secunia. The advisory is shared at protekresearchlab.com. The public release happened without involvement of Novell. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0271 since 12/30/2011. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/13/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

A public exploit has been developed by Francis Provencher in Python and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at protekresearchlab.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62283 (Novell GroupWise Internet Agent 8.x <= 8.0.2 HP3 / 12.x < 12.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Upgrading to version 8.0 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling tcp/9850. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12658.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78601), Tenable (62283) and Exploit-DB (21326). The entries 5711, 5712, 5721 and 5717 are pretty similar.
