IBM AIX 5.3/6.1/7.1 NFS Service denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The NFSv4 client implementation in IBM AIX 5.3, 6.1, and 7.1, and VIOS before 2.2.1.4-FP-25 SP-02, does not properly handle GID values, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via unspecified vectors.

The issue has been introduced in 08/01/2004. The weakness was presented 09/13/2012 as nfsv4_advisory1 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at aix.software.ibm.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4817 since 09/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. GID in NFSv4 is loosely enforced.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2965 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63735 (AIX 7.1 TL 0 : nfsv4 (IV26436)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks.

Applying the patch nfsv4_fix1.tar is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at aix.software.ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78431) and Tenable (63735).
