A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Adobe Photoshop up to 13.0 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file photoshop.exe of the component SGI24LogLum. The manipulation as part of a TIFF Image leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Photoshop.exe in Adobe Photoshop CS5 12.x before 12.0.5, CS5.1 12.1.x before 12.1.1, and CS6 13.x before 13.0.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted TIFF image with SGI24LogLum compression.
The weakness was disclosed 09/03/2012 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia as APSB12-11 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at adobe.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0275 since 12/30/2011. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61775 (Adobe Photoshop CS6 Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities (APSB12-20)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120454 (Adobe Photoshop PNG Image Processing Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (APSB12-20)).
Upgrading to version 12.0.5 (CS5), 12.1.1 (CS5.1), 13.0.1 (CS6) eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78185), Tenable (61775), SecurityFocus (BID 55372†), OSVDB (85437†) and Secunia (SA48457†). adobe.com is providing further details.
