This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0698 since 01/13/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Andy Lutomirski in Python and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79183 (CentOS 6 : trousers (CESA-2014:1507)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120909 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 13.4 Missing).
Upgrading to version 0.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trousers.git.sourceforge.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
