Debian TrouSerS up to 0.3.9 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Debian TrouSerS up to 0.3.9. Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

tcsd in TrouSerS before 0.3.10 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via a crafted type_offset value in a TCP packet to port 30003.

The weakness was presented 11/26/2012 by Andy Lutomirski as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at trousers.git.sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0698 since 01/13/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Andy Lutomirski in Python and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79183 (CentOS 6 : trousers (CESA-2014:1507)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120909 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 13.4 Missing).

Upgrading to version 0.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trousers.git.sourceforge.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80226), Exploit-DB (22904), Tenable (79183), SecurityFocus (BID 55459†) and OSVDB (87739†). See VDB-5989, VDB-5990, VDB-5994 and VDB-5995 for similar entries.
