A vulnerability was found in Ruby 1.9/1.9.1/1.9.2/1.9.3/2.0 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Ruby (aka CRuby) 1.9 before 1.9.3-p327 and 2.0 before r37575 computes hash values without properly restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted input to an application that maintains a hash table, as demonstrated by a universal multicollision attack against a variant of the MurmurHash2 algorithm, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-4815.
The weakness was published 11/28/2012 by Jean-Philippe Aumasson as Bug 875236 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-5371 since 10/10/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62955 (Fedora 17 : ruby-1.9.3.327-19.fc17 (2012-18017)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165861 (SUSE Security Update for ruby (openSUSE-SU-2013:0376-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79993) and Tenable (62955). Similar entries are available at 63666, 64024 and 64023.
