A vulnerability has been found in Perl up to 5.14.2 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function Perl_repeatcpy
of the file util.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the Perl_repeatcpy function in util.c in Perl 5.12.x before 5.12.5, 5.14.x before 5.14.3, and 5.15.x before 15.15.5 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption and crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via the x string repeat operator.
The weakness was presented 12/17/2012 by Tim Brown with Brown as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at perl5.git.perl.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-5195 since 09/28/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69736 (Amazon Linux AMI : perl (ALAS-2013-177)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350569 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for perl: ALAS-2013-177).
Upgrading to version 5.12.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at perl5.git.perl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79639) and Tenable (69736). See 7882, 10928, 63318 and 63016 for similar entries.
