MoinMo MoinMoin up to 1.3.4 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in MoinMo MoinMoin up to 1.3.4 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The software uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the software does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in the (1) twikidraw (action/twikidraw.py) and (2) anywikidraw (action/anywikidraw.py) actions in MoinMoin before 1.9.6 allow remote authenticated users with write permissions to overwrite arbitrary files via unspecified vectors. NOTE: this can be leveraged with CVE-2012-6081 to execute arbitrary code.

The weakness was released 01/02/2013 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at hg.moinmo.in. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-6495 since 01/02/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63356 (Debian DSA-2593-1 : moin - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195336 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Moin Vulnerabilities (USN-1680-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.3.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80954) and Tenable (63356). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 63309 and 63308.
