The dissect_version_5_and_6_primary_header function in epan/dissectors/packet-dtn.c in the DTN dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.13 and 1.8.x before 1.8.5 accesses an inappropriate pointer, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was released 02/02/2013 as Bug 7945 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1584 since 01/30/2013. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64795 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : wireshark (SAT Patch Number 7317)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166682 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:0322-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
