Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in QEMU 0.12.0 (Virtualization Software). This vulnerability affects the function e1000_receive
of the component Device Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the e1000_receive function in the e1000 device driver (hw/e1000.c) in QEMU 1.3.0-rc2 and other versions, when the SBP and LPE flags are disabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (guest OS crash) and possibly execute arbitrary guest code via a large packet.
The weakness was published 02/12/2013 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.qemu.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-6075 since 12/06/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/29/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75130 (openSUSE Security Update : xen (openSUSE-SU-2013:1404-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166341 (OpenSuSE Security Update for XEN (openSUSE-SU-2013:1404-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org.
