IRCD-Hybrid up to 8.0.5 hostmask.c try_parse_v4_netmask input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in IRCD-Hybrid up to 8.0.5. This issue affects the function try_parse_v4_netmask of the file hostmask.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The try_parse_v4_netmask function in hostmask.c in IRCD-Hybrid before 8.0.6 does not properly validate masks, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a mask that causes a negative number to be parsed.

The weakness was released 02/12/2013 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wiki.mageia.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0238 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by kingcope in Perl and been published 3 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66105 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : ircd-hybrid (MDVSA-2013:093)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 7.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81695), Tenable (66105) and Exploit-DB (24951).
