A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.2.23/2.4.3 (Web Server). It has been declared as problematic. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in the balancer_handler function in the manager interface in mod_proxy_balancer.c in the mod_proxy_balancer module in the Apache HTTP Server 2.2.x before 2.2.24-dev and 2.4.x before 2.4.4 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted string.

The weakness was released 02/26/2013 with Oracle (Website). The advisory is available at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4558 since 08/21/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 6700 (Apache 2.4.1 to 2.4.3 Multiple Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilites), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 105728 (EOL/Obsolete Software: Apache HTTP Server 2.2.x).

Upgrading to version 2.2.24-dev or 2.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12992.
