CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in boost 1.48.0/1.49.0/1.50.0/1.51.0/1.52.0. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function boost::locale::utf::utf_traits. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

boost::locale::utf::utf_traits in the Boost.Locale library in Boost 1.48 through 1.52 does not properly detect certain invalid UTF-8 sequences, which might allow remote attackers to bypass input validation protection mechanisms via crafted trailing bytes.

The weakness was released 03/12/2013 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at svn.boost.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0252 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75153 (openSUSE Security Update : boost (openSUSE-SU-2013:1523-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166275 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Boost (openSUSE-SU-2013:1523-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81836), Tenable (75153), SecurityFocus (BID 57675†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38774†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
