A vulnerability was found in boost 1.48.0/1.49.0/1.50.0/1.51.0/1.52.0. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function boost::locale::utf::utf_traits
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
boost::locale::utf::utf_traits in the Boost.Locale library in Boost 1.48 through 1.52 does not properly detect certain invalid UTF-8 sequences, which might allow remote attackers to bypass input validation protection mechanisms via crafted trailing bytes.
The weakness was released 03/12/2013 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at svn.boost.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0252 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75153 (openSUSE Security Update : boost (openSUSE-SU-2013:1523-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166275 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Boost (openSUSE-SU-2013:1523-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
