modules/rlm_unix/rlm_unix.c in FreeRADIUS before 2.2.0, when unix mode is enabled for user authentication, does not properly check the password expiration in /etc/shadow, which allows remote authenticated users to authenticate using an expired password.
The weakness was shared 03/12/2013 by Timo Warns with PRESENSE Technologies GmbH (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-4966 since 12/23/2011. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1552 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72719 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / 12.04 LTS / 12.10 / 13.10 : freeradius vulnerabilities (USN-2122-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195770 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Freeradius Vulnerabilities (USN-2122-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.1.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
