Poppler 0.22.0 arbitraryTransformMask null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Poppler 0.22.0 (Document Reader Software). This vulnerability affects the function Splash::arbitraryTransformMask. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

splash/Splash.cc in poppler before 0.22.1 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via vectors related to the (1) Splash::arbitraryTransformMask, (2) Splash::blitMask, and (3) Splash::scaleMaskYuXu functions.

The weakness was shared 04/09/2013 by Marcus Meissner as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1789 since 02/19/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65536 (Fedora 17 : poppler-0.18.4-4.fc17 (2013-3457)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166654 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for poppler (SUSE-SU-2013:0596-1)).

Upgrading to version 0.22.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82513), Tenable (65536), SecurityFocus (BID 58198†), Secunia (SA52846†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38982†). The entries VDB-63965 and VDB-63963 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
