A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Poppler 0.22.0 (Document Reader Software). This vulnerability affects the function Splash::arbitraryTransformMask
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
splash/Splash.cc in poppler before 0.22.1 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via vectors related to the (1) Splash::arbitraryTransformMask, (2) Splash::blitMask, and (3) Splash::scaleMaskYuXu functions.
The weakness was shared 04/09/2013 by Marcus Meissner as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1789 since 02/19/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65536 (Fedora 17 : poppler-0.18.4-4.fc17 (2013-3457)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166654 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for poppler (SUSE-SU-2013:0596-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.22.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
