IBM AIX 5.1.0/5.2.0 Commands Collection symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in IBM AIX 5.1.0/5.2.0 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Commands Collection. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The (1) bos.rte.serv_aid or (2) bos.rte.console filesets in IBM AIX 5.1 and 5.2 allow local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on temporary files via unknown attack vectors.

The issue has been introduced in 05/01/2001. The weakness was published 04/22/2004 with IBM (Website). The advisory is shared for download at techsupport.services.ibm.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-2634 since 12/04/2005. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1087 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 5.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at aix.software.ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (16008). Additional details are provided at www-912.ibm.com. Similar entry is available at 82000.
