A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component WebKit. The weakness was shared 09/19/2012 by Martin Barbella with Google Chrome Security Team as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as not defined posting (Website) via iDefense. The advisory is available at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1520 since 03/08/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/13/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62077 (Apple iTunes < 10.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12817.
