The MoodleQuickForm class in lib/formslib.php in Moodle through 2.1.10, 2.2.x before 2.2.10, 2.3.x before 2.3.7, and 2.4.x before 2.4.4 does not properly handle a certain array-element syntax, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended form-data filtering via a crafted request.

The weakness was disclosed 05/24/2013 by Dan Poltawski as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.moodle.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2083 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

By approaching the search of inurl:lib/formslib.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66646 (Fedora 19 : moodle-2.4.4-1.fc19 (2013-8668)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84432) and Tenable (66646). The entries 64191, 64190 and 64189 are pretty similar.
