Wireshark up to 1.8.6 fragment_add_seq_common input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function fragment_add_seq_common. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The fragment_add_seq_common function in epan/reassemble.c in the ASN.1 BER dissector in Wireshark before r48943 has an incorrect pointer dereference during a comparison, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.

The weakness was shared 05/24/2013 with Wireshark as Bug 8599 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-3556 since 05/20/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69169 (SuSE 10 Security Update : wireshark (ZYPP Patch Number 8659)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166492 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:1084-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84367), Tenable (69169), SecurityFocus (BID 59997†), Secunia (SA53425†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-39752†).
