Apple QuickTime up to 6.5.1 QuickTime.qts stsc memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Apple QuickTime up to 6.5.1 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file QuickTime.qts. The manipulation of the argument stsc with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in Apple QuickTime (QuickTime.qts) before 6.5.1 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via a large "number of entries" field in the sample-to-chunk table data for a .mov movie file, which leads to a heap-based buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 02/18/2004. The weakness was presented 05/02/2004 by Karl Lynn (DiGiT) with eEye (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at eeye.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0431 since 04/30/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 74 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12226 (QuickTime < 6.5.1 .mov File sample-to-chunk Table Data Handling Overflow (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2795.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16026) and Tenable (12226). Additional details are provided at heise.de.
