VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 2.0.5 ASF Demuxer modules/demux/asf/asf.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 2.0.5 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file modules/demux/asf/asf.c of the component ASF Demuxer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The ASF Demuxer (modules/demux/asf/asf.c) in VideoLAN VLC media player 2.0.5 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted ASF movie that triggers an out-of-bounds read.

The weakness was released 07/10/2013 by Debasish Mandal as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1954 since 02/19/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66216 (VLC < 2.0.6 ASF Demuxer Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121324 (VLC Media Player Multiple Security Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (66216), SecurityFocus (BID 57333†), OSVDB (89598†), Secunia (SA59793†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-39444†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-9448 and VDB-10577. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
