Python setuptools up to 0.7b4 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Python setuptools up to 0.7b4 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

easy_install in setuptools before 0.7 uses HTTP to retrieve packages from the PyPI repository, and does not perform integrity checks on package contents, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted response to the default use of the product.

The weakness was published 08/05/2013 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at pypi.python.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1633 since 02/06/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70382 (GLSA-201310-09 : Setuptools: Man-in-the-Middle attack), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166799 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for python-setuptools (SUSE-SU-2014:0523-1)).

Upgrading to version 0.6.47 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (86299), Tenable (70382), SecurityFocus (BID 61827†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41351†).
