HP ProCurve Manager 3.20 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in HP ProCurve Manager 3.20 (Router Operating System). This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

HP ProCurve Manager (PCM) 3.20 and 4.0, PCM+ 3.20 and 4.0, Identity Driven Manager (IDM) 4.0, and Application Lifecycle Management allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a marshalled object to (1) EJBInvokerServlet or (2) JMXInvokerServlet, aka ZDI-CAN-1760. NOTE: this is probably a duplicate of CVE-2007-1036, CVE-2010-0738, and/or CVE-2012-0874.

The weakness was disclosed 09/16/2013 (Website). The advisory is shared at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4810 since 07/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/24/2024). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70414 (Apache Tomcat / JBoss EJBInvokerServlet / JMXInvokerServlet Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12483 (Red Hat JBoss EJBInvokerServlet is Accessible to Unauthenticated Remote Users). The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 03/25/2022 with a due date of 04/15/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13438.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87007) and Tenable (70414). The entries 7501, 26015, 64920 and 64919 are pretty similar.
