HP ProCurve Manager 3.20 Certificates fileName input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in HP ProCurve Manager 3.20 (Router Operating System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Certificates. The manipulation of the argument fileName with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

UpdateCertificatesServlet in the SNAC registration server in HP ProCurve Manager (PCM) 3.20 and 4.0, PCM+ 3.20 and 4.0, and Identity Driven Manager (IDM) 4.0 does not properly validate the fileName argument, which allows remote attackers to upload .jsp files and consequently execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors, aka ZDI-CAN-1743.

The weakness was shared 09/16/2013 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at zerodayinitiative.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4812 since 07/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/30/2024).

The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121592 (HP ProCurve Manager Multiple Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13430.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87009), SecurityFocus (BID 62348†), Secunia (SA54788†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42018†).
