The remoteDispatchDomainMemoryStats function in daemon/remote.c in libvirt 0.9.1 through 0.10.1.x, 0.10.2.x before 0.10.2.8, 1.0.x before 1.0.5.6, and 1.1.x before 1.1.2 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (uninitialized pointer dereference and crash) via a crafted RPC call.
The weakness was released 09/30/2013 with Ubuntu as Bug 1006173 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4296 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69999 (CentOS 6 : libvirt (CESA-2013:1272)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195905 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libvirt Vulnerabilities (USN-1954-1)).
