A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Barton ngIRCd up to 20.2. This affects the function Handle_Write
of the file conn.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) Conn_StartLogin and (2) cb_Read_Resolver_Result functions in conn.c in ngIRCd 18 through 20.2, when the configuration option NoticeAuth is enabled, does not properly handle the return code for the Handle_Write function, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and server crash) via unspecified vectors, related to a "notice auth" message not being sent to a new client.
The weakness was released 10/01/2013 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at freecode.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-5580 since 08/23/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69544 (Fedora 18 : ngircd-20.3-1.fc18 (2013-15290)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (69544).
