MongoDB up to 2.2.3 nativeHelper first input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in MongoDB (Database Software). This vulnerability affects the function nativeHelper. The manipulation of the argument first with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

MongoDB before 2.0.9 and 2.2.x before 2.2.4 does not properly validate requests to the nativeHelper function in SpiderMonkey, which allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (invalid memory access and server crash) or execute arbitrary code via a crafted memory address in the first argument.

The weakness was disclosed 10/01/2013 with SCRT (Website). The advisory is shared for download at jira.mongodb.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1892 since 02/19/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by agixid in Ruby and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 176 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76662 (RHEL 6 : MRG (RHSA-2013:1170)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 2.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83054), Tenable (76662) and Exploit-DB (24947). The entries 65154 and 64433 are pretty similar.
