A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Outlook 2003 (Groupware Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component HTML Mail Reply Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Outlook 2003, when replying to an e-mail message, stores certain files in a predictable location for the "src" of an img tag of the original message, which allows remote attackers to bypass zone restrictions and exploit other issues that rely on predictable locations, as demonstrated using a shell: URI.

The bug was discovered 01/01/2001. The weakness was disclosed 05/10/2004 by http-equiv with malware.com as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0502 since 05/27/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

A public exploit has been developed in ZIP Archive and been published 2 years after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at malware.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1225 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product.
