Algorithmic complexity vulnerability in the ssl.match_hostname function in Python 3.2.x, 3.3.x, and earlier, and unspecified versions of python-backports-ssl_match_hostname as used for older Python versions, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via multiple wildcard characters in the common name in a certificate.

The weakness was disclosed 10/09/2013 by Florian Weimer with Red Hat Product Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.python.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2099 since 02/19/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70269 (Ubuntu 12.10 / 13.04 : python3.3 vulnerabilities (USN-1985-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124707 (Fedora Security Update for python-pymongo (FEDORA-2016-52b294538d)).
