A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in rubygems up to 2.0.0 (Programming Language Software). This issue affects the function Gem::Version::ANCHORED_VERSION_PATTERN
in the library lib/rubygems/version.rb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Algorithmic complexity vulnerability in Gem::Version::ANCHORED_VERSION_PATTERN in lib/rubygems/version.rb in RubyGems before 1.8.23.2, 1.8.24 through 1.8.26, 2.0.x before 2.0.10, and 2.1.x before 2.1.5, as used in Ruby 1.9.0 through 2.0.0p247, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a crafted gem version that triggers a large amount of backtracking in a regular expression. NOTE: this issue is due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2013-4287.
The weakness was published 10/17/2013 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4363 since 06/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72746 (Amazon Linux AMI : ruby19 (ALAS-2014-290)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166303 (OpenSuSE Security Update for ruby19 (openSUSE-SU-2013:1611-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
